# Uninstall hivemux from your Mac

Remove hivemux with hivemux uninstall - which config blocks and Claude Code hooks it deletes, what it keeps, and how to remove the Homebrew or git install.

Source: https://hivemux.dev/docs/uninstall/

Run `hivemux uninstall` to remove hivemux. It deletes the hivemux blocks from `~/.tmux.conf`, the Ghostty config and `~/.zshrc`, removes the hivemux hooks from Claude Code settings, and closes the sidebars. Your own config stays; saved layouts and backups stay in `~/.local/share/hivemux`.

## Remove the configuration

```sh
hivemux uninstall
```

This:

- removes the block between `# >>> hivemux >>>` and `# <<< hivemux <<<` from `~/.tmux.conf`, `~/.config/ghostty/config` and `~/.zshrc`
- removes the hivemux hooks from `~/.claude/settings.json`, leaving your other hooks alone
- removes `remoteControlAtStartup` from Claude Code settings if hivemux setup turned it on
- closes the sidebars in a running tmux (restart tmux to drop the remaining key bindings)

Your tmux sessions and Claude Code conversations keep running. Running `hivemux uninstall` again is safe.

## What stays

`~/.local/share/hivemux` keeps saved layouts, the tmux plugins and config backups. Originals of the files setup changed are in the backup folder, with timestamps:

```sh
ls -la ~/.local/share/hivemux/backups/
```

## Remove the program

After `hivemux uninstall`, remove the program itself the way you installed it.

Homebrew:

```sh
brew uninstall hivemux
```

Git install (the install script put the source in `~/.local/share/hivemux/src`). Deleting the data folder removes the source along with saved layouts, plugins and backups:

```sh
rm -rf ~/.local/share/hivemux
```

:::caution
Delete `~/.local/share/hivemux` only if you no longer need the config backups in it.
:::

## Reinstall later

```sh
curl -fsSL https://hivemux.dev/install.sh | bash
```

See [Install](/docs/install/).
